A 74-year-old bicyclist was hit and seriously injured Friday afternoon in Carlsbad, and police asked anyone who may have witnessed the crash to come forward.
The collision occurred about 1:15 p.m. on a busy stretch of El Camino Real between Carlsbad Village Drive and Marron Road, according to Carlsbad Police Department spokesperson Jodee Reyes.
The crashed knocked the bicyclist unconscious, Reyes said. Police officers arrived to find him seriously injured in the northbound lanes of El Camino Real approaching Hosp Way.
It’s unclear what caused the crash, and Reyes would not say whether it was believed to be a hit-and-run incident.
“Officers are investigating to understand what occurred,” Reyes wrote in an emailed response about the nature of the crash. “We are seeking witnesses to aid the investigation.”
Reyes did not say how severe the victim’s injuries were, or the exact type of injuries he sustained.
Any possible witnesses to the crash, or anyone who has information about it, were asked to call the Carlsbad Police Department at (760) 931-2197.
