On the season’s biggest stage, Cathedral Catholic’s stars shone their brightest.
Running back Lucky Sutton had touchdown runs of 4, 77 and 88 yards and Rex Haynes had TD catches of 51 and 19 yards as the No. 2-seeded Dons beat Carlsbad 48-19 to claim the Open Division championship before a standing-room only crowd of more than 6,500 at Escondido High on Saturday night.
Cathedral Catholic (10-2) advances to the Southern California Regionals with pairings announced next Sunday. Carlsbad’s season ends at 11-1.
Sutton finished with 13 carries for 269 yards. The Dons rushed 30 times for 344 yards while Charlie Mirer completed 5 of 7 passes for 119 yards and two scores.
Carlsbad rushed for just 53 yards, but sophomore quarterback Julian Sayin was sensational, completing 25 of 31 passes for 251 yards and a pair of TDs.
Carlsbad struck first, scoring on its first possession as Sayin hit Matt Moore with a 67-yard scoring pass.
After that, it was all Cathedral.
A 58-yard run by Sutton set the Dons up at the Carlsbad 7. Two plays later, Sutton scored from the 4.
An interception by Harmon Savaiinaea, who later scored on a fumble recovery, on a Carlsbad halfback pass, gave the Dons the ball and Mirer hooked up with Haynes for 41 yards. On the next play, Tanoi Letuli scored on a 21-yard run.
Cathedral made it 21-6 at the half with Mirer and Haynes hooking up for a 51-yard TD.
Sutton’s 88-yard run came on the first play of the third quarter. His 77-yard scamper cameon the first play after Carlsbad scored to make it 28-13 late in the third quarter.
