NCAA baseball regionals filled with players from San Diego

The baseball hotbed of San Diego will be well represented this weekend when the NCAA Regionals begin.

Including the University of San Diego, which has 10 locals on the roster, there are 37 players on Division I regional rosters.

Three of those regionals are of particular interest as play begins Friday.

Arizona (37-23) and Ole Miss (32-22) are in the Coral Gables (Fla.) Regional.

The Wildcats and Rebels play in the first round with center fielder Mac Bingham (Torrey Pines) hitting ninth in the Arizona lineup. Bingham, a sophomore, is hitting .279 with five homers, 11 doubles, seven triples and 46 RBIs.

On the other side, right-hander Derek Diamond (Ramona) is a starter for Ole Miss. Diamond has made 15 appearances for Ole Miss, 13 starts. He’s 4-4 with a 6.57 ERA, working 612/3 innings.

The Rebels have yet to name their starting pitcher for the game with Arizona, which also has freshman outfielder Kyle Casper (Valhalla) on its roster (though he’s played just four games).

In the College Park (Md.) Regional, Wake Forest (40-17) meets UConn (46-13).

Infielder Zach Sehgal (La Jolla), a graduate transfer from Stanford, has played in 19 games for Wake Forest and is hitting .217.

Junior center fielder T.C. Simmons (Santana/Grossmont College) has started 57 games for UConn. Hitting seventh in the lineup, he’s batting .266 with five homers, 16 doubles and 37 RBIs. He has walked 39 times and been hit by a pitch 16 times.

Simmons injured his ribs in the fifth game last season and was forced to redshirt.

Also Friday, USD (36-18) meets Vanderbilt (36-21) in the Corvallis (Ore.) Regional. Right fielder Spencer Jones (La Costa Canyon) is Vanderbilt’s leading hitter, batting .367 with nine homers and 49 RBIs. He leads the Commodores with 19 doubles and has been successful on 12 of 13 steal attempts. He hits third in the lineup.

Big hitters

Right fielder Anthony Hall (Point Loma) hits third in the Oregon (35-23) lineup. Hall leads the Ducks, hitting .321 with 14 homers and 50 RBIs. He has one error in 109 chances in right. Oregon opens with Michigan in the Louisville (Ky.) Regional.

Ethan “Duce” Gourson (Point Loma) is the only UCLA (38-22) player to appear in all 60 games. The shortstop hits cleanup and is batting .295 with three homers and 42 RBIs. He has drawn 41 walks and been hit by a pitch 17 times. UCLA opens with Florida State in the Auburn (Ala.) Regional along with Southeast Louisiana. Freshman infielder Alex Fernandes (San Marcos) has played in nine games for the Bruins while infielder Bryce Grudzielanek (Torrey Pines) is redshirting.

▶Columbia (30-16) opens against Gonzaga in the Blacksburg (Va.) Regional. Senior infielder Austin Mowrey (La Jolla Country Day) and sophomore outfielder EJ Kreutzmann (La Jolla Country Day) are big parts of the Lions offense. Mowrey is hitting .285 with a pair of homers and 13 RBIs. Kreutzmann is hitting .343 with three homers and 25 RBIs.

▶Sophomore third baseman Christian Lopez (Otay Ranch) hits third for Alabama State (34-23), which plays No. 1-ranked Tennessee in the Knoxville (Tenn.) Regional. Hitting seventh, Lopez is hitting .259 with a pair of homers and 35 RBIs.

▶Shortstop Zach Prajzner (San Marcos) hits sixth in the Notre Dame (35-14) lineup and is batting .301 with five homers and 31 RBIs. He has started all 49 games for the Irish, who open with Texas Tech in the Statesboro (Ga.) Regional.

Murphy Stehly (Santa Fe Christian) plays right field and hits in the cleanup slot for Texas (41-19), which opens with Air Force in the Austin Regional. Stehly is hitting .377 with 17 homers, 21 doubles and 54 RBIs.

▶Freshman Jordan Thompson (Helix) has started all 58 games at shortstop for LSU (38-20), which plays Kennesaw State in the Hattiesburg (Miss.) Regional. Thompson is hitting .286 with six homers, 12 doubles and 31 RBIs.

Pitching stalwart

Senior right-hander Michael Knorr (Carlsbad) is the No. 2 starter for Coastal Carolina (36-18), which opens with Virginia in the Greenville (S.C.) Regional. Knorr is 5-0 with a 2.81 ERA. He has 84 strikeouts and just 10 walks in 64 innings.

Around the regionals

Alex Jones (Rancho Bernardo/Palomar College) has played in 42 games for Oral Roberts (38-18), which plays Texas A&M in the College Station Regional. Jones, a catcher, is hitting .183 with three homers and 21 RBIs. Right-hander Jacob Widener (San Marcos/Palomar College) has pitched in seven games for Oral Roberts.

▶Infielder Austin Kretzschmar (Helix) has played in 33 games for Stanford (41-14), which plays Binghamton in the opening round of the Stanford Regional. He’s hitting .172 with a homer and seven RBIs. Catcher Vincent Martinez (San Marcos) has played in 24 games for the Cardinal and is hitting .204 with five homers and 11 RBIs. Freshman lefty Gavin Nalu (Cathedral Catholic) is redshirting.

▶Infielder Leo Mosby (Westview) has played in nine games for UC Santa Barbara, which is also in the Stanford Regional, while right-hander Cooper Rons (Cathedral Catholic) is redshirting.

▶Right-hander Keaton Carattini (La Costa Canyon) made two appearances in May for Michigan (32-26) after battling back from an early-season injury. The Wolverines play Oregon in the Louisville Regional

▶Right-hander Cade Brown (Cathedral Catholic) is redshirting at Oklahoma and right-hander Noah Waldeck (Tri-City Christian) is redshirting at Grand Canyon.
