The California State University San Marcos Foundation Board recently announced three new directors and new roles for two directors.
The board is composed of community leaders and philanthropists who cultivate and encourage charitable investment in the university, build regional relationships and encourage philanthropy. The announcement came at the board’s first meeting this year, which was held this week.
Steve Wagner, co-founder and president of Stone Brewing Co., will be the board’s new chair. Emilie Hersh, founder of management consulting firm Unbuttoned Innovation Inc. in Carlsbad, is the new vice chair.
Wagner has supported and advocated for Cal State San Marcos and its mission for many years. He is the original brewmaster at Escondido-based Stone Brewing, and developed the award-winning recipes for some of the company’s most iconic beers.
Hersh has 20-plus years of accomplishments and experience, including consulting, technology startups and team leadership across a number of industries. She has led sales, marketing, IT, finance, project management and operational excellence teams.
The foundation board’s three new directors:
Jessica Berger is vice president of University Advancement and executive director of the CSUSM Foundation. She started July 12. In University Advancement, she leads a team focused on building a culture of philanthropy and interpersonal connection.
Daniel J. Epstein is the founder of The ConAm Group, one of the nation’s top apartment management/ownership firms, and was awarded an honorary degree from CSUSM in 2020. In 2017, the Epstein family helped with an expansion project for CSUSM’s Epstein Family Veterans Center.
Simon Kuo is the vice president of corporate quality at Viasat, and is the founding partner of Cal State’s electrical and software engineering programs. Before joining the foundation board, Kuo served on the advisory board of the university’s College of Science and Mathematics (now the College of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics).
