San Diego has a wide variety of amazing food from all over the world, and if you do some research, you can find some amazing cheap eats. As a native San Diegan, born and raised, I love uncovering some of San Diego’s best food on my YouTube channel Jaycation.
Seasurf Fish Company in Del Mar Heights is located in a Vons shopping center and its $2 fish tacos and $6 poke nachos during its very affordable happy hours are delicious deals. Happy hour is daily from 3 to 6 p.m.
You will also notice many places around San Diego offering Taco Tuesday specials. Although you have to take a drive over to Ramona, Los Rancheros has an amazing $1 street taco deal every Tuesday, and the owner’s cousin comes from Mexico just to make birria, a soup or stew traditionally made of goat or lamb meat, every Tuesday. Stop in after a day out visiting Julian or Three Sisters Falls.
Now I’m fairly new to Indian cuisine and discovered this hidden gem in Sorrento Mesa called Charminar Indian Restaurant. The owner is from Hyderabad, India, and the restaurant serves some of the most amazing Southern Indian cuisine. This restaurant has lunch specials and posts many great deals on its Instagram page. Try its tasty crispy cauliflower and chicken biryani. The biryani is so popular that you can literally buy it by the bucket. Also try the tasty mango lassi.
Next up is Quiero Tacos in Seaport Village. Paired along with Mike Hess Brewing, Quiero Tacos is owned by one of the sons of the owner of the popular City Tacos, which has multiple locations around town. The quesi birria tapatia for $4.35 is a must try, along with a fish taco. Make sure to wash it down with a Steel Beach Lager.
With a Portuguese/Hawaiian flavor to its food menu, Jaunt Coffee Roasters in the Miralani Makers District serves tasty malasadas and empanadas. The owner, is originally from Madiera, Portugal, and this place serves some of the best coffee in San Diego. Also, I recommend the orange ginger cold brew!
Pho Cow Cali in San Diego is a San Diego Vietnamese restaurant staple. Its rare steak pho is to die for, and its spring rolls are the perfect appetizer. Also try its tasty taro or Thai iced tea drinks!
Looking for San Diego’s next big brewery? Check out Burgeon Beer with three locations around the region in Carlsbad, Escondido and Little Italy. Its Hazy IPAs are amazing, and I love its Invita Mexican Lager. Burgeon has a very welcoming vibe and its newest location in Little Italy has a nice patio off of Kettner Boulevard to enjoy your brew.
Since I am Filipino American, I know there are plenty of amazing Filipino restaurants in San Diego. If you’re in Mira Mesa, try out Nanay’s Best BBQ and get the sisig, which is a Filipino dish made with pig cheeks, chicken liver, calamansi, onions, vinegar and chili peppers. If you like a Filipino breakfast, check out Manila Sunset Grille on Mira Mesa Boulevard in Scripps Ranch or its other location in National City for tosilog — cooked pork tocino with garlic fried rice and egg — and longsilog, which is Filipino longganisa sausage with fried rice and egg as well. These restaurants also have a frequent customer points program where if you get enough points you can get a free bibingka dessert. If you live in southern San Diego, there are places like Tambayan Filipino BBQ & Grill in Paradise Hills or Tita’s Kitchenette in National City, which are great choices for a combination Filipino lunch plate.
Filipino fusion food has gained in popularity over the past few years, and Sayulita’s Mexican Food in Escondido, San Marcos and several San Diego locations has an assortment of burritos with Filipino favorites combined into a Mexican style burrito. Try out the tosilog burrito and add some vinegar to it. Another unique burrito at Sayulitas is the lumpia burrito, which includes a couple pieces of Filipino-style lumpia.
Finally, if you are in the mood for pizza, Pauly’s Pizza Joint in Miramar is one of the best New York pizza joints in San Diego. The owner is Brooklyn-born and a disciple of a long line of pizza makers who came from the famous Bronx Pizza in Mission Hills. Make sure to try out the Christmas Pie or Pauly’s favorite, the classic cheese slice.
Long Island Mike’s in Kearny Mesa is one of my all-time favorite pizza joints in San Diego. The owner is one of the coolest pizza owners in the city, and he also comes from a background at Bronx Pizza. Try the buffalo chicken pizza or cheese slice.
If you’re looking for deals, check out Best Pizza & Brew in Cardiff, Carmel Mountain, Mira Mesa, Oceanside and Vista as every day in their last hour from 9 to 10 p.m., all pizza slices available are only $1.50.
