PREP FOOTBALL: John Maffei’s Week 2 picks

No. 2 Carlsbad (0-0) at No. 5 Mater Dei Catholic (0-1)

When: 7 p.m., Friday

Preview: Carlsbad, which didn’t play last week, is coming off an 11-1 season and returns 5-star QB Julian Sayin. TE Zack Marshall has committed to Michigan. WR Justin Johnson figures to be a deep threat. DL Finn O’Gorman and LBs Thomas Weirich and Jacob Sisson lead the defense. Mater Dei Catholic lost 28-14 to No. 1 Cathedral Catholic last week. The Crusaders are led by QB Dominic Nankil, but could be without RB Nico Mosley. LB Tre Edwards, a UCLA commit and last season’s San Diego Section Defensive Player of the Year, is dealing with an ankle problem. MDC is ranked No. 9 in the state by MaxPreps. Carlsbad is No. 30.

Prediction: Carlsbad 24, Mater Dei Catholic 21

El Capitan (1-0) at Hilltop (1-0)

When: 7 p.m., today

Preview: Led by the QB tandem of Brandt Barker and Bruce Newland, El Capitan beat Canyon Hills 37-6 last week. The pair threw for 260 yards and three TDs. WR Julian May had four receptions for 149 yards and Chance LaChappa caught four balls for 72 yards. The defense had three interceptions, two by Austin Cordeiro. Hilltop beat Valhalla 28-14 with QB Jorge Garcia throwing for 83 yards and rushing for 118 and a pair of TDs. WR Isaac Meza caught all four passes. The defense recovered three fumbles.

Prediction: El Capitan 31, Hilltop 13

Patrick Henry (0-0) at Mt. Carmel (0-1)

When: 7 p.m., today

Preview: Henry was 10-3 last season, winning a San Diego Section Division IV championship. The Patriots have a new coach in Colby Davis, but shouldn’t miss a beat with QB Malachi Ghitman returning. He has protection up front in Hassan Noureddine, Kory Symington, Aedyn Jamison and R.J. Teixiera. Mt. Carmel is coming off a 48-20 loss to Central Union. Sundevils’ QB Joshua Bell threw for 230 yards but was intercepted twice and was sacked three times.

Prediction: Patrick Henry 35, Mt. Carmel 21

Hoover (0-1) at El Cajon Valley (0-1)

When: 7 p.m., today

Preview: Hoover lost its opener 21-16 to Mountain Empire. El Cajon was tied at 13 with Mission Bay at the half, but lost 27-13. RB Kal-el Gordon is the threat on offense. The defense gave up 345 yards.

Prediction: El Cajon Valley 28, Hoover 24

St. Augustine (0-1) at Oceanside (0-1)

When: 7 p.m., today

Preview: St. Augustine lost 29-13 last week to El Camino, Oceanside’s crosstown rival. Saints’ freshman QB Brady Palmer completed 13 passes for 77 yards. The team rushed for 72. The rebuilding Saints start as many as seven freshmen. Oceanside lost 42-0 to San Clemente, one of the top teams in the state as San Clemente rolled up 424 yards.

Prediction: St. Augustine 21, Oceanside 20

Poway (1-0) at Eastlake (0-1)

When: 7 p.m., today

Preview: Poway beat Granite Hills 31-19 behind RB Conner Rath, who had 148 yards and a pair of TDs. Poway rushed for 217 yards. DB Johnathan Butler had a pair of interceptions, blocked a kick and had a 92-yard kickoff return. Payton Spratt had 13 tackles. Eastlake lost 42-7 to a very good Apple Valley team. Eastlake had just 87 yards total offense — minus-8 rushing. AJ Rodriguez had 16 tackles and Tyler Bourke 14.

Prediction: Poway 28, Eastlake 14

Olympian (1-0) at San Pasqual (1-0)

When: 7 p.m., today

Preview: Olympian opened with a 21-0 shutout of Westview with the defense getting 10 sacks. Luke Mena had 15 tackles and two sacks. Ethan Mallon scored two TDs and had a pair of sacks. Sophomore QB Kristian Noriega threw for 144 yards and a score. San Pasqual rushed for 378 yards in a 50-20 win over Orange Glen. QB Eli Griffin threw for 76 yards and a TD and rushed for 159 yards and a score. ILB Peter Decelles had 10 tackles and 3 TFL as the defense had two interceptions, five TFL and an interception.

Prediction: San Pasqual 31, Olympian 21

La Jolla Country Day (1-0) at Crawford (1-0)

When: 7 p.m., today

Prediction: La Jolla Country Day opened with a 30-27 win over Chula Vista. QB Bito Bass-Sulpizio threw for 209 yards and rushed for 19. Charlie Gooding had eight catches for 75 yards and had 104 yards in returns. The defense gave up 296 yards, but Jordan Hochberg had two interceptions, Oliver Stephenson had 14 tackles and Jaden Mangini had five TFL. Crawford beat Mar Vista 35-21, but gave up 329 yards.

Prediction: La Jolla Country Day 31, Crawford 21

University City (1-0) at Del Norte (1-0)

When: 7 p.m., today

Preview: University City opened with a hard-fought 14-7 win over Fallbrook. QB Samuel Cooper threw for 230 yards and two TDs. Troy Brassler caught 11 passes for 157 yards and a score. Del Norte started with a 46-0 whitewash of Escondido.

Prediction: University City 28, Del Norte 24

Tri-City Christian at San Ysidro

When: 6:30 p.m., today

Preview: Tri-City Christian opened with a 20-18 loss to Southwest-San Diego. San Ysidro rolled up 414 yards, but lost a pair of fumbles in a 35-30 loss to Kearny. QB Ja’Marcus Giles threw for 208 yards and rushed for 53. RB Angel Garcia rushed for 161 yards and three TDS and had three of the team’s five interceptions. WR Johnny Garcia had seven catches for 155 yards.

Prediction: San Ysidro 31, Tri-City Christian 20
