Preview: QB Reggie Johnson, RB Tyson Bryant and WR Jake Jackson lead Madison into the Western League opener. The Warhawks defense has been outstanding, giving up just 47 points. Only Mira Mesa (14) and Granite Hills (12) have scored in double figures. MLB James Tivao has 67 tackles. OLB Lawson Minshew and DE Makhai Viavia eac has 51, while Viavia has 11 sacks and DE Zyan Watson has eight. Madison is ranked No. 26 in the state. … Cathedral Catholic, ranked No. 30 in the state, has played a murderous schedule, losing to Concord De La Salle, Chandler of Arizona, Corona Centennial and Lincoln last week. The Knights are led by freshman QB Kreet Makihele, who has 1,866 yards passing with 24 TDs and only 5 interceptions. WR Jace Nix has 39 catches, Joshua Bells has 30 and Nolan Cummings 22. The Knights have rushed for just 289 yards. … Carlsbad is led by QB Julian Sayin, who has thrown for 1,330 yards and 14 TDs., RB Mason Walsh has 91 carries for 527 yards. Sayin has four quality targets in Griffin Rosenbloom, Justin Johnson, Nico Arboit and TE Zack Marshall. Ranked No. 23 in the state, Carlsbad’s only loss is to Inglewood.
