SDSO Deputy Involved in Encinitas Shooting – NBC 7 San Diego

San Diego County Sheriff’s Department deputies shot and killed a man who they say had a gun after responding to a call in Encinitas on Friday.

The shooting occurred at about 8 a.m. on a hillside in a neighborhood north of Leucadia Boulevard and west of Interstate 5, after deputies were called about a suspicious person, the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department said.

When deputies arrived, they encountered a man who, at some point, pulled out a handgun, according to SDSO. The department released the below photo of the weapon.

Two deputies fired shots, striking the man at least once, SDSO said.

The man was taken to a nearby hospital but did not survive.

No sheriff’s deputies were injured, SDSO said. The identities of the two deputies involved were not disclosed.

A deputy with the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department was involved in a shooting in Encinitas Friday. No deputies were hurt. NBC 7’s Audra Stafford shares what we know, so far, live from the scene.

Detectives remained on the scene Friday afternoon investigating the incident. During the investigation, the 1400 block of Orpheus Lane was closed.

Neighbors heard the shots nearby.

“This morning I heard a couple of loud bangs and I wasn’t sure what it was and a bunch of sirens coming over to our neighborhood,” said resident Vicki Campbell.

Campbell lives on Eolus Avenue near a vacant lot that stretches down a hillside to Orpehus street.

“I’m sad it had to come down [to that]. No one deserves to lose their life. It’s just frightening to know this person was with a handgun on this property so close to our home,” she said.

NBC 7 is reaching out to the San Diego County Sheriff’s Department for more information. This story will be updated.
